The two abbreviations most often confused in synthetic yarn production are POY and DTY. Both belong to the same production chain, but they represent different stages — and tube selection changes accordingly.
What is POY?
POY is short for Partially Oriented Yarn. It is the intermediate product that emerges at the first stage of synthetic yarn production.
The polymer is melted, extruded through spinnerets into filaments, cooled and wound. At this stage the molecular orientation of the filaments is only partially complete — hence "partially oriented".
POY is not a finished product on its own. It normally goes on to the next stage: texturing or drawing.
What is distinctive about the POY stage
Two points stand out in POY winding.
Package weight. POY packages are generally heavier than those at the following stage. The tube carries both this weight and, if it sits in a lower row of a stack, the load above it.
Waiting time. POY packages may sit in storage before entering the texturing process. Throughout that period the tube must hold its shape and its strength. Warehouse humidity is therefore more critical on the POY side.
POY tubes compared with DTY tubes
The difference between the two products lies not in material but in sizing and strength targets.
What they have in common
- Both are made of paperboard
- Both are sized to order
- In both, surface smoothness and end integrity are critical
Where they differ
- Wall strength. Because package weights on the POY side are generally higher, the compressive strength expected of the wall differs.
- Length. Winding widths can differ between the two stages.
- Storage time. Because POY packages may wait longer, resistance to moisture comes to the fore.
How to tell which one you need
The simple distinction is this: does the tube mount on the machine the yarn comes out of, or the machine the yarn goes into?
- At the output of the melt spinning line: POY tubes
- At the output of the texturing machine: DTY tubes
Confusion usually arises on the creel side. Packages waiting in the creel are the product of the previous stage.
POY tubes at Kafkas Masura
Our POY tubes are made of paperboard and produced in custom sizes, to order. Dimensions and strength are determined with your winding tension, full package weight and storage conditions in mind.
If you are unsure which product suits you, simply share details of the machine and yarn you work with.
